Addressing his supporters after becoming the projected winner of the mayor’s race, Mamdani said “the future is in our hands”
More than 2 million voters have cast their ballot in the 2025 election, the biggest turnout for a mayor’s race since 1969, the city’s Board of Elections says
Addressing his supporters after becoming the projected winner of the mayor’s race, Mamdani said “the future is in our hands.”
“Over the last 12 months, you have dared to reach for something greater,” he said. “Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it. The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty.”
Mamdani went on to say that he wishes Cuomo “nothing but the best in his private life.”
“But let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page on a politics that abandons many and answers only to the few. New York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change. A mandate for a new kind of politics. A mandate for a city we can afford. And a mandate for a government that delivers exactly that,” he said.
Mamdani thanked all New Yorkers who voted in the general election, giving himself the chance to “prove myself worthy of your trust.”
“To every New Yorker, whether you voted for me, for one of my opponents or whoever felt too disappointed to vote at all, thank you for the opportunity to prove myself worthy of your trust,” he said. “There are many who thought this day would never come, who feared that we will be condemned only to a future of less, with every election consigning us simply to more of the same. And there are others who see politics today as too cruel for the flame of hope to still burn. New York, we have answered those fears. Tonight, we have spoken in a clear voice. Hope is alive.”
More than 2 million voters cast their ballot in the 2025 election, the biggest turnout for a mayor’s race since 1969, according to the city’s Board of Elections.
In his victory speech, Mamdani addressed President Donald Trump, who has heavily criticized him during his mayoral campaign.
“So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up,” he said as the crowd cheered.
Mamdani declared that New York City will “remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant.”
Cuomo, who attempted to make a political comeback in the mayor’s race after resigning as governor in 2021, said his campaign was “the right fight to wage.”
“This campaign was to contest the philosophies that are shaping the Democratic Party, the future of this city and the future of this country,” he said.
He said almost half of the New Yorkers did not vote for Mamdani’s agenda.
“We support an economy of jobs, of opportunity, of entrepreneurship. That’s what New York is, and that’s what New York should remain,” Cuomo said.
Cuomo congratulated Mamdani during a speech to his supporters. When his congratulations was met with boos, Cuomo shook his head and said “that is not right.”
“That is not us,” he said. “Tonight was their night, and as they start to transition to government, we will all help any way we can because we need our New York City government to work. We want it to work for all New Yorkers because our city is the greatest city in the world, and we will unite for New York City because we love New York City.”
Mamdani won the Democratic primary in June to become the party’s nominee after defeating Cuomo 56.4% to 43.6% in the final round of ranked-choice voting.
He kept a steady lead in the race in the aftermath of the primary, with polls showing him ahead of Cuomo by double digits ahead of the general election.
Mamdani began his political journey in 2020, when he won a crowded Democratic primary race and the general election for state Assembly District 36, which represents Astoria and part of Long Island City.
While in office, some of his key accomplishments have included helping implement a pilot program to provide free bus service on one line in each borough and joining taxi drivers in a hunger strike to relieve millions of dollars of debt.
The current mayor, Eric Adams, will only serve for one term. He will remain in City Hall until Dec. 31.
